Pre-workout supplements help you to get the most out of your workout. They give you energy and focus, extend your stamina, and — depending on the specific formulation — they can also help you to build muscle, burn calories, or build mass.
Looking at the big picture, we divide pre-workout supplements into three levels, depending on how much stimulant they contain.
NON-STIM
At the first level, pre-workout supplements don’t contain any stimulants at all. These ‘non-stim’ products target two primary groups: athletes who are trying pre-workout supplements for the firt time and people who don’t want to take anything that would elevate their blood pressure.
MEDIUM STIM
Products in the second level — we call it ‘medium stim’ — contain a moderate level of stimulant, and they’re perfect for athletes who have been working out for six weeks or more and are looking for a bit of a boost. They’re also a good choice if you ordinarily use a ‘high-stim’ supplement, but want something lighter when you work out in the evening.
HIGH STIM
The third level, then, is high-stim. High-stim products — as you’d expect — have the highest amount of stimulants in the formula. These are for athletes who are working out at top intensity, athletes who have used medium-stim products and are comfortable bumping things up a notch.
